Fundus Photography is an advanced digital retinal photograph. By taking a digital fundus photo image of the back portion of the eye (the retina), the doctor can detect and monitor

ocular health. The screening picture that is produced captures a clear view of the optic nerve, blood vessels, macula and fovea.

In general, fundus photography may be considered medically necessary if performed to:

• evaluate abnormalities in the fundus
• follow the progress of a disease
• plan the treatment for a disease
• assess the therapeutic eff ect of recent surgery (e.g., photocoagulation)

Fundus photography is not medically necessary simply to document the existence of a condition.

Photographs are medically necessary to establish a baseline to judge later if a disease is progressive.
